The minor in Philosophy is offered for students who wish to supplement their scholarly preparation in another major discipline with a substantial amount of coursework in Philosophy. A minor in Philosophy is particularly appropriate for those who wish to hone their reasoning and critical-thinking, to pursue self-knowledge, or to develop a theoretical perspective on their major discipline.

A minor in Philosophy can serve as a useful basis for students in Anthropology & Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, Environmental Studies, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Health Administration, History, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science, or Social Work.

Minor Requirements

Requirements for the Minor

Students must meet all university requirements for a minor. In addition, students must contact the advisor regarding the requirements listed below, submit transfer courses to the advisor for approval of the minor by the first week of the intended graduation term, and complete all courses with a “C” grade or better.

Required Courses

Students must complete one course from Group A and one course from Group B:

Group A:

  • Logic and Practical Reasoning (3) Theory of Knowledge (3)

Group B:

  • Introduction to Ethics (3) Theory and Practice (3) Political Philosophy (3)

Selectives (12 Hours)

In addition to courses completed toward satisfaction of required courses from Group A or B, students must complete any four of the following courses:

  • Philosophy of World Religions (3)
  • Philosophical Issues in Religion (3)
  • Studies in Philosophy (3)
  • Environmental Ethics (3)

  • Ethics in Sports (3)
  • Introduction to Philosophy (3)
  • Theory of Knowledge (3)
  • Method and Values in Science (3)
  • Comparative Philosophy of Science and Religion (3)
  • Chinese Thought (3)
  • Women In Philosophy (3)
  • Black And Africana Philosophy (3)
  • Theory and Practice (3)
  • Political Philosophy (3)
